Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications was founded in October 2001 by Japanese multinational Sony and Sweden-based telecommunications leader Ericsson AB. It is equally owned by both companies and it launched its first product range in March 2002.
Ericsson AB was been involved in telecommunications since its inception in 1876, as a maker of telephone equipment. Sony, originally Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, began 1945 as a radio repair shop.
The two have come together to create a world leader of mobile multimedia products, including PC cards, feature-heavy phones and accessories. The mobile phones offer applications for mobile games, music, communications and entertainment.
Based in the UK, its R&D teams are spread out around the world from Sweden to China to Germany to India and Japan. In just 5 years it has become the fastest-growing cell phone vendor and the world's most profitable.
Sony Ericsson aims to be the leading player of mobiles with bleeding edge applications, making new partnerships with developers and content providers. Agreements with strategic partners include Sony BMG who provides the greatest and most recent in entertainment content to its customers. It is also heavily involved in mobile games.
By 2004, Sony Ericsson became the leader in the mobile gaming arena as it became the first to launch Java 3D-enabled handsets, and is plowing forward to launch 3D gaming to a greater audience.
During a recent technology conference, Sony CEO Phil Harrison, showcased a Sony Ericsson phone using the PlayStation's XMB, which is great news for mobile gamers.
Currently its main focus is on the areas of: camera, business (web and email), music, design, games and priced focused cell phones. Its four biggest sectors are: The Walkman, a mobile exclusively for music but also perfect for 3-D games. The Cyber-shot, a leader in camera phones and includes a flash and auto-focus. The UIQ, notable for is keypad and touch screen. And the Xperia phones which incorporate the Windows Mobile Operating System.
